Step Outside the Chaos

March 20, 2019

In these modern times it is hard to stay connected to what really matters. To stay balanced. To find your place, your stability. We are assaulted with information. Overstimulated by external demands telling us who to be, how to be, what to want, who to want, what to expect of ourselves and others. And the expectations shift every moment. We’re kept on our toes. Backpedaling. If we don’t realize what is going on we never step out of the way of the freight train of stimulus that is right in front of us.

So how do you manage getting ahead, staying ahead, being ahead in this insane rush?

You step out of the game.

Step off the tracks. Because that train is going to mow you over if you don’t. And what you are may be smeared along the tracks for ten, twenty, fifty years of what could’ve been your life. But it wasn’t. Instead, it was the constant attempt to stay ahead of all you were told you’re expected to be.

So where is your center? And is it YOUR center? What do you really value?

Most people never ask themselves these questions. So, they are easy to manipulate. Easy to trigger. A little-known secret is that the most functional aspects of modern psychology are used specifically to sell you things by triggering your unconscious fears. The entire foundation of advertising and marketing is based on creating an image of what you should be, what you should want, and who you should want, then convincing you that you don’t have any of it.

The thing is that you’ve been getting this from your family, school, religion, the media since you were born too.

Most of who and what you are is tied up in the expectation of others. So, what is really you?

In the Tonalpohualli, the Toltec ritual calendar, one of the day signs is Calli, House. Calli is a reminder that your external world is a reflection of your internal world. If your internal world is in chaos, then your external world will also be in chaos. And chaos is easy to manipulate. It is easy to influence. Most of the people and forces that seek to influence you do not have your best interests in mind. They are simply out to get what they want from you. So why put yourself in their hands unquestioningly?

In order to find a sense of peace and fulfillment in your life you have to learn how to chaos from within you. You have to learn to be selective about where your energy goes, and more importantly why it goes there.

This is why mindfulness is becoming so popular these days. In order to function in a stimulus-infested world we have to learn to find stillness within ourselves. Otherwise our days, weeks, months, and years fly by without our having noticed them. We scramble from one thing to the next trying to stay ahead of the anxiety that the very system we live in creates in us so that we can keep feeding it time and money.

So step outside of the chaos. If only for a few moments at the beginning and end of your day.
